CALL FOR SESSION PROPOSALS

This is an invitation to submit proposals for sessions in the 6th International Jellyfish Blooms Symposium (6th IJBS), to be held November 4-6, 2019 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Prospective session chairs are encouraged to build their session into development-focused themes. Sessions are encouraged to address the following:

  • Development of technology in midwater and deep- ocean;
  • Structure of jellyfish communities using new analytical tools
  • Jellyfish as new resource/raw material (food, medical applications, etc.)
  • New modelling approaches of jellyfish dispersion/ecology
  • Observation and quantification of jellyfish, improving our understanding on the diversity and dynamics of jellyfish and jellyfish blooms
  • DNA barcoding, metagenomics, new species identification: the way forward
  • Citizen science

Sessions arising from a single project/program or based on a local question or issue (e.g., species, process) are less preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A SESSION CHAIR

As a proposer of an accepted session, you will be the session chair. You are to solicit manuscripts and collaborate with the conference scientific committee in determining which manuscripts are to be accepted, as well as structuring presentation time in your session.

Sessions may have an oral, poster, or combined oral/poster format and may include standard 15-minute presentations and/or five-minute lightning-style presentations. Poster sessions can use new technologies (e.g., enhanced reality, QR codes) to provide a better understanding of topics.

Proposals for session should:

  • Justify what will be achieved in the session.
  • Highlight the novelty of the session from previous JBS, and that there should be enough high quality, unpublished material to fill the session.

SESSION PROPOSAL GUIDELINES

  1. Lead convener – name with full contact information
  2. Other convener names – (limit to three other conveners) and email addresses
  3. Identify preferred session format – Most oral sessions will have an associated poster session. Poster sessions may be proposed as stand-alone. For oral session proposals, indicate: Traditional (15 minutes), Lightening-style talks (5 minutes), combination, or other (specify)
  4. Session Title (limited to 10 words) – If your title is greater than 10 words, it may be shortened before publication
  5. Proposals – Submit both a short description (50–100 words) to be used for wide distribution, including the program book, and a long description (500 words) of the proposed session (no tables or graphics).
Each proposed session will be evaluated by the scientific committee. Due to the short timeframe of the symposium, there will only be a limited number of oral sessions possible. We look forward to your submissions.
